Secrets to Lasting Garage Organization
Lets face it, going to look for something in the garage can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack.
From that lost keepsake you are sure is "in there somewhere" to the judgement of friends or family when they come over, its a wonder why we continue to pile up the mess.
But imagine stepping into a clutter free garage whiling knowing precisely where everything is without even having to memorize it. A system that makes it easy to not only store what your not currently using but effortlessly grab what you need, when you need it...
A cluttered garage can feel overwhelming, but getting it organized doesn’t have to be a stressful project. With the right strategy, you can transform your garage into a clean, efficient space in just a weekend. Here are five essential hacks to help you take control of the chaos and get everything in its rightful place.
1. Set Aside Time
Before diving into your garage organization project, set aside a full day or even a weekend to do it right. Organizing requires time to pull everything out, sort through it, and make decisions on what stays or goes. Avoid rushing the process—scheduling time will help you avoid cutting corners and ensure you finish the task properly.
Pro Tip: Take breaks to keep up your energy, and focus on small sections of the garage at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed.
2. Label & Categorize
As you sort through your items, create categories for everything. Group similar items together, such as tools, holiday decorations, sports gear, and cleaning supplies. Once categorized, make sure to label boxes, bins, and containers clearly so you can easily find things later.
3. Create Activity Zones
One of the most effective ways to keep your garage organized is to create designated zones based on activities. For example, you can have a gardening zone, a tool zone, a space for sports equipment, and another for seasonal items. By assigning each area a specific purpose, you’ll ensure that everything has a place and you’ll reduce the chance of clutter building up again.
Pro Tip: Keep the zones you use most often (like tools or sports gear) easily accessible, and place less frequently used items, like holiday decor, in harder-to-reach areas.
4. Utilize Wall Hangers
Free up floor space by installing wall hangers or hooks to store items vertically. Tools like brooms, shovels, and bikes can all be hung on the walls, which not only clears clutter but also makes things easier to find. Wall-mounted shelving and pegboards are also excellent for organizing tools and small items.
Pro Tip: Consider adding a pegboard for your most frequently used tools so they are always within reach.
5. Donate Unused Items
We know it can be hard getting rid of things, but it is important to keep the main goal in mind: eliminate frustration & clutter. Instead of holding onto things that take up valuable space, donate what you haven’t used in the past year. This will not only reduce clutter but also give others a chance to use items that are still in good condition.
So, knowing the benefits of a clutter-free garage is one thing, but actually building a system and enjoying a stress free space is another. But don't worry, we're here to help!
I'm Jasen, and I get it..
I understand the struggle of having a super messy & completely disorganized garage.
That is why I created a handmade tote storage rack, a grab & go system for keeping the mess out of your garage. My passion for this came when I built this system for my parents garage. The contrast before and after brought them so much joy and they told me all the frustration it relieved. I knew that I wanted to help more people experience this.
